The Head Monk, often referred to as the Chief Monk, is the spiritual leader and supervisor of the Vihara. They are typically a highly experienced and learned monk who provides guidance and teachings to the resident and visiting community. The Chief Monk is responsible for the overall administration and well-being of the Vihara.
Besides the Chief Monk, there may be senior monks who have spent many years in monastic life, deepening their practice and knowledge of Buddhist teachings. They often serve as mentors and spiritual guides for other resident monks and the community.
The Vihara may also host visiting monks from other monasteries or countries. These monks may be invited to give teachings, lead meditation sessions, or participate in special events and ceremonies.
It’s important to note that the roles and titles of resident monks may vary from one Buddhist Vihara to another, depending on the traditions and customs followed by that particular Vihara. The resident monks are not only responsible for their own spiritual development but also for guiding and serving the lay community, offering teachings, and participating in the various activities and programs organized by the Vihara to promote the study and practice of Buddhism.
